Project director Brian Larson said the one-year Minnesota Historical & Cultural Heritage Grant was made by the Minnesota Historical Society. The research team includes authors Armand Peterson (Town Ball: The Glory Days of Minnesota Amateur Baseball); Frank White (They Played for the Love of the Game: Untold Stories of Black Baseball in Minnesota); Kevin Hoy, longtime player and manager for the Minnetonka Millers; and baseball researcher Dave Kelly. “We plan to write a condensed, easy-to-read, but complete story about Minnesota’s wonderful town ball history,” Larson said. “We will publish the booklet late in the 2023 season, but prior to the state tournaments. We think the booklet will help generate publicity for the tournaments and will be a treasured souvenir for baseball fans all over the state.” The research team requests town ball players, officials, and fans to support the project by digging into their archives for photos, official documents such as old by-laws, and old news clippings or other documents yellowing in scrapbooks or file cabinets and cardboard boxes. The team will copy and return any items sent to them, and will archive them for future storage at the Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame and/or the MBA website, where they will be available to the public. Please contact Brian on 612-581-6467 or at blarson8964@ gmail.com if you have items that could help the research team.
